I've advised many friends and acquaintances over the years. Eight have switched and each of them often thank me for suggesting a Mac.

Three others who ended up getting Windows PCs, had system crashes and regretted not going the Mac route. But still bought replacement Win PCs.
They all had the same reason. Price.

I got my:

Mom
Dad
Sister
Brother in Law
Uncle
Aunt
and 8 friends

to all switch to Mac. It was insanely worth it. They all are very happy and enjoy computers now.

I have Windows Vista (pre-service pack 1) to thank for all of that. Its failure to be able to copy large amounts of data from one drive to another is the reason I went and bought a Mac, and never looked back.

I still have a few others I need to convince, one friend has went through 5 Win machines (2 HP's, 2 Sony's, and a Compaq) in 4 years and still refuses to buy a Mac.

A grad school bound friend made the switch, followed by her sisters, and now her mother. The father, I switched to Ubuntu. He was still using windows ME so anything was an improvement.

I got a co worker to get a Mac pro notebook when he w looking for a portable. He does a lot of Linux and Unix support and likes to tinker on the command line.

It came with Snow Leopard and worked great for him. I warned him to avoid Lion for now due to problems people are having with it on portables but he went ahead and now it acts up/hangs on him. So at least he understands it's his fault for rushing and still likes the hardware.

i got 3 people convinced to get Mac's in 2009 , all bought the 27"iMac's .

2 of them had one trouble after the other until 2011 , it looks like now after the iMac's had all parts replaced multiple times during Apple Care that they work well now .

The 3rd who bought his iMac in november 2009 was not that patient and switch back to windows and to a Dell xps AIO in beginning 2010 ,after 5 returns of his iMac without solving the problems (only got worse ), and because of that he says "dare to mention Mac's again in my presents "

since then i keep my mouth shut and stopped convincing people to buy Mac's instead of PC's

I think in the life time of using Macs, I convinced a few people. To be honest, I always recommend the best platform, and in some cases that is the PC.

Advised a couple of friends to get iPhones. They did.

Within a month they both bought Macs and haven't looked back.

Gateway device indeed.

I've converted/gave tech help/word of mouth advertising so much over the last decade that Apple should be mailing me checks each month.

As the resident geek among my family and friends, I convinced several of them to switch when I told them I was finally going to stop providing technical support for their crappy Windows machines. :)

None of them has ever looked back, though.

oooo great thread.

  • My brother - He was using this old POS toshiba running XP i think it was a celeron puke pot. Full of viruses ( i think you can imagine what websites were visited LoL ). Constantly freezing. He was always on at me about a web cam to talk to his friends etc. So i bought him a Macbook. He still has it to this day.
  • My Work colleague, was a linux user since he joined the company i have moved him over to mac, he bought his mac the same day i did as we were both in the store and they where offering a deal. By the Macbook Pro with apple get and get a free iPod touch 8 GB First gen. His MBP has suffered fan failures so him being him and modded it these where bought in 2008 so out of warranty. Mine is out as of this month.
  • My other work colleague i managed to convince him to get a MBA 13 inch. After months of him uming and arrring he bought one.
  • My Dad, i have migrated over to mac. First i gave him my old PPC g4 Mac Mini to use as a rig running leopard but was very slow for what he wanted to do which was photos / internet general stuff. The opportunity arose at work when i had a 24 inch iMac come into the work shop that had suffered severe damage ( Book shelf fell on it ) Cracked glass bent stand etc. I fixed that up ( it still has no glass LoL ) re bent the stand and it is 100 percent working iMac for him. 2.93 C2D 4 GB Ram 1 TB HDD. he uses that for everything + his iTunes server for the apple tv! He now has a iPhone 4 - he got rid of his old company phone finally!

I've got a few friends who would like to switch to Macs and iPhones/iPads, they probably will eventually when/if they can afford it, but as it stands I have converted no one...

It is a bummer when you're the only one within a group who is an Apple user, I have no use for iMessage, FaceTime, iChat, AirDrop, Multiplayer Apps, Find my Friends, and probably others I can't remember.

:(

Not to worry, times are changing.

3 people have gone Mac after seeing my experience with it, my dad, his girlfriend and a close female friend.
I don`t push Apple on anyone and in the case of my mother I advised her to go with a Windows machine because of the Windows Only software she requires.
The cost of a Mac to simply run Win7 on makes no sense at all which is a shame as I feel she would be happier with OSX.

These days, to me, there is no Mac vs PC, you simply buy what suits your requirements, budget and personal preference.

My best friend is the most rabidly anti-Apple person I know.

At least four, but probably more. I don't go around evangelizing Mac computers, but if the topic comes up I go to town. I'm not argumentative about it, but I can give practical explanations for any retort die-hard Windows fanboys come back with.
