I had a nice SLS set up with Software Update Services pulling down updates for LAN distribution. It was a nice way to speed up delivery to clients and limit bandwidth usage to our ISP.

But although MLS has SUS, the ML clients seem to connect to the App Store for their updates. So is SUS functionally dead as we transition to ML, or is there another way to bundle updates for local distribution? (If not, I humbly suggest that this is a massive FAIL on Apple's part).

I was also wondering about this until i saw a client wanted an update and it was listed "from server" next to it. So it does work even when you think why the hell is it going to the app store. I must agree it is kind of hard to know when it is or isn't working. I guess you will have to wait for the next update to see if the client listst it as from server.:)

Haven't had a chance to play with it yet, but I am assuming you set the client to point at your server for updates?

According to the documentation SUS will work, but you would have to use Profile Manager to push out a config that includes pointing software updates to an internal server.

I have not yet tested this as we have not officially OK'd ML for our users outside of IT. I likely won't even build a VM to test until 10.8.1. Lion Server does all of this just fine for the current crop of Macs in our environment. If people install ML on their own, that's their problem.

The App Store is the new repository for all Software Updates either from Apple or internal SUS. When you go to the Apple Store with an internal SUS you will notice it gives you the server address as the source of the updates.

Also, if MLS SUS isn't your bag you could always use Reposado.
