I have a Late Mac Mini 2009 in my living room that i use with Plex watching MKV-files.

I am set to inherit a Mac Mini late 2011

My plan for one of these macs to be a server for downloading files and the other for running Plex, iTunes (with pure music) and safari with some flash based content online. The older mac mini does this fine as it is now Although flash is a bit Jerky. Flash/Silverlight based content on webpages isn't a huge concern it usually works better to use a native Apple TV-app or Airplay from my iPhone

Having the newer mini as the media player would result in a faster device but there's another factor.

I have quite a lot of external storage. Mostly FireWire and some USB 3. I recently got the Belkin express hub that works really great for this with my iMac 2011 that lacks USB 3

So my idea is to hook the newer Mini up to the hub and still have the iMac connected. Get the mini to run Plex Media server and transmission.

Bottom line, the newer mini has TB connectivity and would probably do better when transcoding.

The new mini is faster and has HDMI output for audio and video, i've heard that this is a bit problematic with hooking up to certain Harman Kardon amps so i'd be stuck with a mini DP -> DVI and optical again.

Any thoughts on my ideas here? I will Also get an external optical drive where my Optical drive in my 09 mini is broken but I never use it.
