I took back my whining MacBook Pro today, after a farse of Apple Care 'fixing' the problem and sending it back with the whine still present. The people at the Apple store were very helpfull - I only wish all of the apple people I have spoken to over the last few weeks had been so.

I ordered a 20" iMac from apple.com instead, with 1gb ram and 256mb graphics card upgrades. Does anybody know if they mean it when they say 4 days for them to 'build' the computer? Or is this just a conservative estimate. In a wierd bug on their system the order status page says it will be both shipped AND delievered BY 10th may. I wish they could be a bit more precise!

Mine took a day to built, estimated 4. Its usually a bit quicker than their estimate.

Yes, they're generally conservative estimates*.

My brother's iPod 5G was delivered to him WAY early. He held it in his hands a day before it was even supposed to leave China. He got his iBook five days before it was supposed to be delivered too.

*Unless they're for MacBook Pros. :D

Ordered my iMac on the 18th and received it on the 24th. Estimates showed it not shipping until the 24th so I got it ahead of time.

Sorry for the second post, Joseph!

But I have a few questions for you, if you wouldn't mind answering them (that would be lovely :) ):
a) So they fixed the problem only once? Then you came back with it?
b) Did they offer a gift card or store credit or anything or just to replace it with a Mac of equal or lesser value?
c) Which Apple store did you use? (If you don't want to answer this one, feel no worries - I've just heard that the guy at my local Apple store in King of Prussia, PA is a bit "deaf" considering the MBP whine - just wanted to see).

Your answers would be awesome. I've got a lemon MBP here (stock 1.83 with LOADS of problems - some not common problems either) and I'm hoping to get a replacement (stock 17" iMac Core Duo with $600* back).

*For those wondering, it's $600 back rather than $700 because I get an educational discount. $1800 for the MacBook Pro minus $1200 for the iMac (both stock) equals $600 back.

a) They said they had fixed the problem once (they replaced the main logic board) but when I got it back the whine problem was exactly the same (this is the processor whine not the screen whine).
b) Once I went to the store they offered me a replacement, I said could I have an iMac, and they said would you prefer your money back so I could buy it online and make it simpler. I said yes so they just credited my card with all the money (£1,429 - the full cost of the basic MBP I had).
c) It was the apple store in Regent Street

Anything else you wanna know just aask!

Thanks for the delivery guestimates - let's hope they're just being very conservative I can't wait!

i was wondering whether the apple stores here in the UK were more easy going than those stateside? They replace/refund anything without fuss, and are (as long as you speak to the genius' who know what they are talking about) really helpful!

Certainly possible - and the people in the store were much more helpful than those at applecare.

The time Apple estimates for the iMac to ship has changed - when i ordered yesterday it was 2 days, which went up to 4 days when i added stuff. Now it is 1 day, but goes up to 6 days when you add stuff!

I'm just impatient thats all... grrr
