Hi,
My cMP is a 4.5 upgraded to a 5.1 CPU is 3.33 6 core, 16GB of ram, graphics card a HD5870. I'd like to get a dual processor tray but I understand (Well I think I do?) that it's not just a matter of swapping the trays over, they have to match? Can someone explain how in what way?

I recently discovered the easiest way to install "Windows 10" was to just install it on a separate drive from the CD disk and select it from the boot menu, please advise is this might be causing any problems that might come back and bite my on the ********** later.

Any advice and help welcome...

Mel.

An early-2009 Mac Pro requires an early-2009 CPU tray, SMC needs to match, both the backplane and CPU tray need to have SMC firmware version 1.39f5.

A mid-2010/mid-2012 Mac Pro requires a mid-2010/mid-2012 CPU tray, both the backplane and CPU tray need to have SMC firmware version 1.39f11.

Hi,
Many thanks for your reply! But just where do I find these numbers. I took a look thro System info, just what is SMC?

Thanks...

Hi Guys,
Many thanks for your replies, yes the tray and base both have the 1.39f5 SMC but my base firmware is 144.0.0.0.0 BUT the tray is MP51.0089.B00. Would they still work well together or not?

I've had an offer of a dual CPU tray with 2 x 3.46GHz CPU's and 64GB of 1333 ram

All help and comments welcome.

Mel.

CPU trays/processor tray doesn't have any firmware besides the SMC firmware. BootROM is located on the backplane only.

If the CPU trays/processor tray SMC firmware is 1.39f5, will work with any early-2009 Mac Pro.

If the CPU trays/processor tray SMC firmware is 1.39f11, will work with any mid-2010 or mid-2012 Mac Pro.

Hi All,
Thanks tsialax I think I'm beginning to understand the Mac a bit more now! I have just received the new (to me) CPU tray, this has 2 x 3.46 CPU's and 64GB of ram, way over kill for most of the stuff I do. So is there any test software I can test the CPU's with, as I did notice one CPU heatsink was quite warm and the other cooler. Would it use just one cpu and then the other as needed?? or would they both share the task.

CPU A is the preferred CPU, also, at the down stream of the air flow, therefore, always warmer.

If you want to run stress test for all 24 threads, you can run Prime95.
