Swapping internal hard disk

I ordered a 250GB 2.5" HDD to replace my 80GB PowerBook drive with. How can I transfer my installation, files, and settings from the old drive to the new one? Is it possible to just drag and drop the file directories to an external HDD and then back onto the new drive?
 
good question, im not sure if the migration assistant in the utilities folder can help with this.

ive been wondering the same thing.

When I had my MacBook Pro's drive updated from a 80GB drive to a 120GB drive, I sent it to a service that used Carbon Copy Cloner

  1. attach external drive
  2. Assuming it's new/clean, use Disk Utility to partition and format it. Choose the right partition type for your Mac (Intel vs. PPC)
  3. Use SuperDuper to "back up" your internal to the external
  4. After it is complete, test by rebooting, and holding the Option key down to boot from the external
  5. If that works, you can then take your external apart and move the drive to the internal location

Just make sure that you format it correctly in Disk Utility. To make it easier in SuperDuper, you can name the partition something other than "Macintosh HD". I chose to name mine after the drive model number, aka "7K200"
 
The process I use the most:

1. Install new HDD
2. Install OSX onto the new HDD
3. Run through setup until you get to the part where it asks if you'd like to transfer files
4. Plug old drive in via firewire
5. Transfer with utility.

So, if I use SuperDuper or CCC to create an identical image of my drive on my external HDD, once I put the new internal HDD into my PowerBook how do I get the image off my external drive and onto my internal one?


edit: nevermind. I found the answer in the superduper guide :)

Used this method with a USB to SATA cable and SuperDuper and worked perfectly.
