Hey Everyone, I have a question:

I'm going to be honest: I bought an iphone 1 week ago, and the speaker is really bad. (It doesn't sound as good as my gf's.) Apple wont give me a new one because they say it isn't broken.

So I bought a BRAND NEW iphone, and my plan is to swap sim cards so that I can have my old phone number in the NEW iphone, and then return the OLD iphone within the 14 day return period (and then deal with the restocking fee with Amex).

So after I swapped the SIM card to the new phone, I still need to activate it. Should I call AT&T to do this? Can the number be ported to the new phone? And after I port numbers, when I return the old phone will I somehow loose my precious phone number?? (that would be insanely bad!)

Thanks to anyone who helps me:)

Two things to consider:

There's a good chance that Apple will compare the serial number that's printed on the back of the old phone that you're returning against the serial number that's printed on the front of your receipt. Have a good story in case they notice that they don't match.

Maybe your AMEX card comes with another feature that will help you out, but their "Return Protection" plan doesn't cover restocking fees.

My friend just had his iPhone replaced (legit, through the Genius bar) and all they did was put his old SIM into his new iPhone and it worked. Well, the phone worked immediately. When he synced with iTunes, it restored the last backup from his old phone and then copied all of his music/videos/photos back over. He didn't have to do any porting, etc.

Also, most of the threads I'm reading here and on HoFo.com from people who are swapping phones say that the speaker volume is still low on the new ones that the get. IMO, this is going to take a firmware update from Apple to fix.

if you bought the iphone 1 week ago, why wouldn't you just return that one and get a new one after you were sure you could return it? you'd be paying the restocking fee either way.

Because I was a Verizon customer and potted my old number over to Att. If I returned the original phone, then I suppose I'd loose my number. I'll work on it today after work.

With GSM carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile, your number is associated with your SIM. So if you pop the SIM out of your old iPhone and put it into pretty much any other AT&T phone (including another iPhone), that new phone should immediately start working with your phone number.

In the CDMA world (Verizon/Sprint), your phone number is associated with a phones ESN. If you swapped phones, you'd have to call them (or use a web app) to update their system with your new phones ESN.

IMO, GSM is soooo much nicer when it comes to swapping phones since you don't have to do that. :)

love that answer, I'm gonna try it tonight and see how it works

What was wrong with the speaker? I ask because I'm having issues not related to volume with my ear piece/receiver.
