Very frequently when I swipe up to dismiss an app, the gesture is mis-interpreted and the app switcher opens instead. The swipe was straight up from the bottom of the screen and did NOT pause. But the odd thing is that it seems to only happen once per session, the first time I attempt to close the first app I have opened. When I try to duplicate the issue, swipe up works perfectly every time regardless of whether it is a short or long swipe or anything in between. When trying to stimulate this behavior, the only way I can get the app switcher to open is to do it correctly.... swipe up and pause.

Can't say for sure when this started or whether it has always been happening.

Is this some sort of intended behavior?

Just to give my input: This doesn't happen for me (iPhone X). However, what frequently happens is that I swipe up to get to the home screen and I get the vibration that you also get when invoking the app switcher. However, it doesn't invoke the app switcher in this case.

That’s pretty much exactly what occurs on my last few phones - currently a 13 PM. I have found that if I’m swiping straight up it’s more likely to happen, but if I can focus I will swipe up and to the left at an angle and it never happens then.

I did some more experimenting and found that especially the first time, ANY movement to the right during an intended swipe up may be interpreted as invoking the app switcher. Seems less likely on subsequent tries in the same session.

So based on this and your experience, the issue seems to be weak discrimination between a swipe up and a swipe slightly to the right (which is common when using the right thumb).

Now to try to train myself to always swipe up with no right movement and see if the issue persists.

I’m curious, going by my experience I wonder if left handed people have no issue with this. I’m more likely to go slightly to the right most times, which is why I have to focus and intentionally swipe at an angle to the left. It rarely if ever happens then.

I flick from the bottom of the screen quickly, I always end up at the Home Screen. Or I swipe upward all the way to the top of the screen. If I swipe up from the bottom and delay, maybe half a second I get the app switcher. This is what works for me. I have a 13 Pro Max.
