Same issue here. Usually works for a few minutes in new tabs, but then suddenly just stops working.

Tried downgrading to the 11A480b Version of Safari (5.1 7534.42), still the problem occurs.

Hoping for a bugfix, really got used to it...

What I want to know is why the 3-finger swipe to go back/forward is gone? This was very useful because it's OS-wide for every app including Finder.
I found that pressing the Delete key cause the pages go back in history on Safari 5.1

Syspref option

System Preferences / Trackpad / More Gestures / Swipe Between Pages > Swipe left or right with three fingers
Then 3 fingers for web pages / 4 fingers for screen scroll

The delete key (or more accurately, the backspace key) has done that in every browser since Mosaic.

Setting forward/back to three-fingers has the added effect of disabling the annoying page-swipe animation. Just so you know.

Oh ok I understand it (finally)! Thank you. But that's dumb though because "Scroll left or right with two fingers" will only work with Safari. But if you change it to "Swipe left or right with three fingers" then it will work as 'back/forward', however you no longer have that nice page overlay affect in Safari anymore. Why didn't Apple just make the overlay effect to be a visual upgrade for 'back/forward'? That would have made more sense.

Because it's annoying. And more importantly: because it would actually make no sense. It's part of a scrolling idea. When you simply do back/forward, no scrolling happens.

with the default settings, 4 finger swipe left and right is a universal back and forward control (safari, finder, etc.) the 2 finger swipe is safari only and the 3 finger is for spaces and full screen apps.

It's in the GM build, works great.

If you're talking about the previous page back-and-forth with the overlay, that's not back for me in the GM, and it's still no longer there for me in fullscreen Preview. I have to use the arrow keys to move to the next/previous page in fullscreen Preview. Sadtown.

edit: Nevermind. I didn't look closely enough at the trackpad options until just now. :p
