So, after reading this forum, I went with the advice and went to a Samsung S7. I still have my mac and I figured I could just disable my Apple ID on my iPhone and the few errant messages would go to my mac. I guessed wrong. Any group iMessages I was a part of, I no longer get, i.e. group texts that iPhone converted to iMessages b/c everyone had iPhones - those messages just disappear into the either. I spent a lot of time with Apple tech support and their solution is basically that I have to contact everyone I know has an iPhone and tell them to delete any group messages with me in it if everyone has an iPhone. Ugh. Anyone find a better way? I still have my iPhone, but it is no longer active on the Verizon network.

Do you still have your iPhone? You have to go into settings and sign out of imessage. Now you will get all of your texts to the S7.
here is how to do it on a Mac...

Thanks for the advice!

I signed out on the iPhone and then I deleted the iPhone from my Cloud account and deregistered the number. People can text me individually or in a group message that is a mix of iPhone and non-iPhone. I want my Mac to catch any errant iMessages, so I registered it to get iMessages and that way I can tell people not to use them. However, any group iMessages still are blue - it doesn't see that my phone is now an Android, and the messages just disappear into the ether - they don't go to my Mac and they don't go to my phone.

Maybe start a new text messaging thread from your phone to all those on apple phones. I think that may solve it.

Tried that too. The text gets delivered to the group iMessage.

Apple support told me that I had to contact anyone I was in a group iMessage with and tell them all to delete the iMessage. Not really practical because A) I don't know who this includes and B) each participant has to do it.

This issue has been going on for years. Apple either doesn't want to spend the resources to fix it or they don't know how to.

I set it up to get iMessages, but did not see anywhere to put in my phone number - have you done that??

Yeah, I've done it. Let me go get my Mac and get a screenshot so I can point 9ut where you can look to see if it's hooked up to your number.

Thanks for the suggestion! I just tried it, I can't add my number w/o having an active iPhone. I'll ask Apple support if it's possible.

If it's not there, then I don't know what's wrong. I assumed it might be there without you remembering. The only time I had trouble moving my number was when I still had a device that linked my number to iMessage. If that's not the case, I'm stumped.

No worries! I appreciate the suggestions from you and everyone else! As Lazard said, it appears to be a problem that is even on their FAQ:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203042
(near the bottom)
and doesn't have a fix. ah well. I'll post here if Apple support says anything that helps.

Of course apple doesn't want to fix it. Then the ex-apple user gets frustrated and say, "DangIt, I guess I'll go back to my apple phone. Better yet, they buy a new one."

Hope this may help some of you...

Had the problem yesterday deregistering my number from imessage. Used the online tool, still would not work. Called apple support (who was GREAT). Tried just about everything, he was stumped, his supervisor was stumped. The he asked me "Do you have an Apple Watch?" Which I do. He told me to reset the watch to factory settings, I told him let me try one thing first... I went into the my iphone's watch settings and changed the "mirror my iphone to "custom" and that immediately fixed it and finally I could get texts through my new G7 Edge. He even could see that it fixed it on his end right after I did that.

Thanks. I am getting individual texts, and some group messages, just not group texts where all users were iPhones. Have you had an issue with that yet??

Haven't had anyone group message me yet. The only ones that would are my kids who would just message my wife and I and they both have Android phones.
