Since sometime last week, I'm having an issue with my MBP running macOS 10.15.1 where whenever I switch apps, either swiping between apps or selecting one from the dock, the new window doesn't focus unless I actually select the app window itself. This means I can no longer switch from Safari to Notes and start typing immediately, for example. Neither the window nor the input field is in focus. It's an immensely frustrating workflow killer right now.

Has anybody else experienced similar? I thought it was caused by a recent Hazeover update, but I disabled it and it's still happening.

Having exactly the same problem for the last couple of weeks on a Macbook 12" - so irritating.

I don't use Hazeover - my own suspect was Parallels Desktop (just recently installed the full version rather than their Lite one), but short of a complete uninstall nothing seems to work there.

The odd thing is the menubar shows the right application, but no shortcuts or similar from that application work.

Please let me know if you find a fix!

Did you ever find a fix? For me it's still happening and it's driving me absolutely crazy. Yes, it shows the correct menubar but the app still isn't in focus. If I use the Alfred Menu Bar Search workflow, which I use heavily, it gives me menu bar options for the previous app instead. So basically it appears the app is switching but actually the previous app stays in focus.

Important to note it's the second MBP running Catalina I've experienced this on.

I personally have not seen the issue on either of my MacBook Pro computers running the latest 10.15.4. Did you do a install over or clean install of 10.15.4? Booting into Safe Mode may give you some idea if there is a third party software causing the issue. Maybe also try creating a clean new user account and see if the issue happens in that account.
