Switching From iPhone 5 to Galaxy S5

Getting a Galaxy S5 today or tomorrow. A little nervous because in the past when I have tried moving away from iOS it has been a big pain in the butt and the experience hasn't been as nice so always ended up back on the iPhone.

However, I always tell my friends and myself that even though I have a Mac, iPhone, and an iPad, I am not an Apple fanboy and that if Android came far enough to offer a better value I would switch again. So, I am switching to Android as the OS has come a long way over the last 4 or 5 years.

I chose the Galaxy S5 mainly because of the camera though I did love the look for the HTC One.

I have some questions. As I still have an iPad and am not giving it up, is there any way to keep google and iCloud in synch with each other so I don't have to add events in both places?

Also is there any way to watch a podcast?

Any pitfalls I need to look out for in switching? I already deactivated iMessage.

How do I install apps on an SD card?

What is the best alarm clock app?

I can't seem to find fully functional headphones (volume controls work) for the Galaxy, any suggestions

Stockalarm is fine, but I also use doubletwist alarm... But an alarm is an alarm.

You can find headphones designed for Android....or you can do it to a pair, such as the Apple Earbuds, with a soldering iron and YouTube.

Look up Smoothsync for iCloud in he Google Play store--allows for syncing of iCloud contacts and calendar on Android.

My suggestion would be just to migrate everything over to Google services, especially if you plan on using multiple platforms going forward. Google services all play very nice with iOS and OS X and make switching between platforms much easier.

Yep most apps will save it's main data package to the SD card automatically, especially games. If for whatever reason it doesn't, you simply go into settings/applications/ select the app and tick the option 'move to SD'.

Agreed. I have been pleasantly surprised. I don't think the phone is getting enough credit compared to its predecessor.

Timely for an alarm clock.
Headphones that come with them or any non-idevice headphone will work. Skullcandy and others make them.
I moved to google services for backup and syncing. Cross platform service that just works.

Still loving the S5. I could never go back to the iPhone in its current state. Things could change and we shall see what apple does in the future but do not regret my decision .

First, the system allows me choice. Don't like stock keyboard? Get another. Don't like stock mail app? Get another. Don't like stock browser? Get another. I can also default those apps for the system.

Battery life is way better than on my iPhone. Calendar is amazing, If I need to go somewhere, the phone knows, through maps, when I should leave and tells me that I should leave for that appointment.

Apps are as good or better than iphone. Except for 1 password. Using lastpass now instead. Overall, very happy with my choice. I encourage you to try.

Have you considered the LG G3 instead? It seems to be a better investment than the galaxy S5. I was watching the announcement streaming and I have to say im pretty impressed. I dont know if I would switch to an android though...I'm just an iPhone snob i guess

BUT if I were to go Android, I'd probably get the G3.

This is what I'm currently thinking of doing. But I'm going to wait till the end of the year before I make a decision. I want to switch back to Android, but I'm waiting to see Apple's plans for hardware and software through the end of the year.

I just wish there was more flexibility on the OS over all, but if all Apple does is simply make a larger iPhone then I'll probably switch back.

Do you like Androids better than Apple? I'm curious because before I converted to the iPhone the only smart phone I had was a blackberry and I feel blackberries are a separate entity.

And if you do like Androids better what about it? I'd love some insight.

I miss the amount of control you have over the software, and honestly, thats really it. Android, for me, was more like a computer with virtually no limitations. There's pros and cons to this though. You need to be more diligent and careful about which applications you choose to put on the phone; risks of viruses and such. And beyond that, you do need to be careful with which OEM and phone model you choose to make sure you are getting the best support you get.

On the flip side, I believe you benefit most from Apple if you invest or have invested in their other products. Knowing how well they work so well together is another great benefit where I heavily rely on my MacBook Air, iPhone and Apple TV for my entertainment needs. Also, when I was a heavy user of iTunes for music, instead of carrying both a phone and an iPod, I could merge the two together. But between the music library I already have, and other streaming services like Spotify, I don't use iTunes like I used to.

It could be that I just want a change, and see how far Android has come.

Just set up your iPad to use Google for the calendar syncing.

With iMessage already disabled you should be fine. Obviously you won't be able to sync your music iTunes anymore either so make sure you have an alternative for that. I usually just manually dump the mp3 files on the SD card.

Settings > Apps > choose an app > click "move to SD card"

My inline controls on my headphones (B&W P3) work fine on my S4, no reason why those types of controls shouldn't work on the S5. They didn't used to work on Android but they do nowadays.

Hope you enjoy it! I moved from the iPhone to the S4 last year and have been perfectly happy, especially with having a decent sized screen unlike my old iPhone.

Thank you for giving me great insight! I have an iPhone 5 right now and I'm planning on upgrading to the iPhone 6 when its out. I have a macbook and an iPod and currently shopping for an iPad. I use my macbook and iPhone A LOT and I agree, I don't use iTunes like I used to. I used soundcloud a lot more and a little bit of spotify. I rarely use my iPod since I have my iPhone.
