Switching from Verizon to AT&T for iPhone...many questions!

Sometime this week, I plan on porting out from Verizon to ATT. I would like to transfer over my number (which I have confirmed is eligible to be ported) as well. Finally, I will need to pay an $85 early termination fee with verizon.

what is the easiest way to get up and running with my same number on an iphone?

I'm guessing all of this should be taken care of at an ATT store. Okay...

If I go to the ATT store to port my number from vzw, what is the process to port it? Do I go to the ATT store BEFORE cancelling my vzw account, or after? (i think the vzw guy said that if I cancel the account before going to ATT, I lose the number. is that true?)

What do I bring to the ATT store, documenting that I do, in fact, own the right to that number?

And then, at what point do I pay the ETF from verizon? does ATT basically let vzw know I've abandoned ship?

This is all assuming I get this done at an ATT store. what is the process if I just go to an apple store and buy the phone? what exactly IS the iTunes activation? would it let me port my vzw number through itunes?

Hi! I just made the same switch....

To port a number, you will need to go to an ATT store.
You just go to ATT, ask for them to set up your iPhone and port your number.... they handle getting the number onto the iPhone account.
Once your number is ported, Verizon will (as far as I know) automatically send you the bill for the ETF. There is nothing you have to "do" up front before getting your new account set up with ATT.

Any store that carries iPhones will transfer your number. Just write down your Verizon account number and bring it.
