So I am officially converting my friend from a PC to a Mac this week. She has an iPhone and has synced it to her laptop using Windows Vista. She has had MAJOR problems with 5 iPhones! That's right FIVE!

So now that she is converting to an iMac, will she lose all of her contact information off of the iPhone when she syncs it to her iMac? Is there a way to back up on Vista and use that back up on the iMac?

Also, what about mp3s she's downloaded from iTunes on Vista? Will she be able to successfully download them on her iMac?

Never converted, always been a Mac fan, so not sure how this will work. Hopefully someone out there knows the easiest transition! Thanks guys!

That depends on how her contacts are stored.

First, they're not MP3's. The iTunes Music Store uses a different format.

You don't have to re-download them -- you can just back up the actual files and transfer them over to the Mac. iTunes will ask you for your account information to get the decryption keys for the files, but other than that you won't need to do anything special. (I would recommend de-authorizing the PC once you're done moving the music over.)

The best thing to do in my opinion is copy your whole itunes folder in windows onto an external hard drive/flash drive. You can copy your phone contacts into windows contacts, then copy those to the external hard drive/flash drive too.

Then when the mac is up and running with the latest version of itunes, replace the mac itunes folder with the windows itunes folder that you have copied to the external hard drive. Import the windows contacts into the mac address book. Then you should be able to sync everything.

Okay thanks, I got the music files down.

But regarding the iPhone, will it ask to restore the iPhone if she plugs it in to the iMac?

How can I transport her contacts from her iPhone to her new iMac without restoring?

Thanks again you guys are the best.

Usually yes, but there is a way to prevent this. I cannot post a link because I am on my iPhone, but try searching 'sync iPhone to multiple computers' on google. There is a file that you can copy onto the mac from the windows PC which will tell iTunes that the iPhone is registered to it.
