I'm currently living in Austria and my region code is set at 2. If i put a region 1 movie in my dvd player can i rip it with handbrake without having to switch my drive back to 1?

If it is a superdrive then not unless you switch the drive region to 1 unfortunately. None of my superdrives will rip anything other than their own region discs. However, switching to an external USB DVD drive often gets around this. I have an HD DVD drive from my Xbox 360 which I regularly use to rip out of region discs on my Mac. Something about full-size drives makes them easy for VLC (which does the decryption) to circumvent region coding whereas the superdrive laptop drives don't.

Size isn't the matter, it largely depends on the manufacturer of the drive and how he treats region codes.
