I'm making the transition over to Apple.. I'm considering either the new 21.5" iMac or a refurbished 24". I'll be using this for photography and will need to use the built-in screen until I allocate funds for a better monitor like the NEC LCD2690WUXI2. I recently found this article:

http://www.fireandknowledge.org/archives/2009/04/21/a-free-easy-way-to-make-your-glossy-imac-screen-glare-free/

Can someone (who has tested this) confirm if this same technique will work on the new 21.5" iMac?

Also, regarding Snow Leopard.. I called Apple and was told that the new iMac's come with Leopard installed and the disc to upgrade to Snow Leopard as you desire. I contacted Macmall and B&H Photo, and it seems that their iMacs only come with Snow Leopard, and one would need the old Leopard disc to downgrade/reinstall. Can someone confirm which dealers sell the new iMacs with the old Leopard? I don't want to run Snow Leopard until any issues have been resolved with Adobe Photoshop CS4, Data Robotics' DroboPro, and Integrated Color's ColorEyes Display Pro. (If anyone has any experience with these products working or not working with Snow Leopard, please do share)

I know I can easily do most of what I do with Mac-compatible programs, though there are two specific programs I still seek free / open-source OS X solutions for: Notepad++ and AutoIt. I know plenty must be out there: what is a good text editor for coding? And, what scripting program (programmable with language syntax, not a recorded macro) can easily send keystrokes/mouse movements to any program, and detect when a program has run and is ready and/or when it is closed, such as AutoIt can in Windows? (any language variant is fine - can OS X's included AppleScript perform these specific functions?)

Thanks in advance!

Yes, you can remove the glass on a 21" iMac. But why not try it before you knock it?

I was put off by the gloss as well, especially since I was using a 24' Dell 2405 matte for a couple of years, but the gloss has been a complete non-issue.

FWIW, CS4 and Color Eyes (with a Spyder 2) works fine on my 24" iMac and 10.6.2

A quick look at the three places you mentioned all list working with 10.6.2 just fine...

99.99999999999999999999999999% of the time if you buy a new Mac will not run any version lower than what it ships with.

Thanks for everyone's responses!

I will try the 21.5" iMac before removing the glossy screen, though wanted to know it is definitely removable just in case the reflections are too distracting. I am working on a 17" glossy Toshiba screen now, and do find that I really must turn off the lights and work in the dark when making final color corrections (and sit in a certain position so that I am looking straight on at the screen).

I'll have to research the Snow Leopard compatibility a bit more: upon speaking with Adobe and Data Robotics not long ago, they suggested waiting to use Snow Leopard. Other forums suggested color-management issues.. Perhaps the latest updates have corrected any potential issues.

If I do discover that I should wait for Snow Leopard for my applications, does anyone know if buying through Apple is the only way to get Leopard installed on the hard disk with the SL disc for upgrading? Also, what are the potential limitations of running 10.5.x on the new entry-level iMac?

Thanks again!

ColorEyes Display Pro with ColorEye / X-Rite DTP-94 / Monaco XR; Anti-virus options

Thanks!

Does anyone know if the latest update of ColorEyes Display Pro will work with the ColorEye calibrator (I believe this is the same as the X-Rite DTP-94 / Monaco XR) in Snow Leopard?

Also, I know viruses are far less of an issue on OS X than Windows.. what does everyone recommend in terms of the necessity of a product like Norton Anti-Virus for Mac (or any other software that may be better)? Do we need advanced internet security features in such software, or is vulnerability to attacks not an issue?
