Guys,
I'm a PC guy but creating DVDs from Mini-DV Home movies is a chore. I use Pinnacle Studio 10 and it crashes constantly and Rendering a 1hr DVD can take upwards of 4 Hrs.
My question: Is the final rendering time on Mac's equally as long and intensive? I know the platform is more stable but if the Rendering is the same, I may as well just upgrade my PC.

Would a top-of-line Mac mini work well for Basic video editing and DVD creation?

Rendering a 1hr DVD can take upwards of 4 Hrs.

On my quad 2.5 Ghz G5 it can take that long encoding to a VBR m2v......yesterday it took 1 hour to encode a 13 minute video (so if you do the math, in four hours of encoding I could do 52 minutes of video...)

So 4 hours to do 1 hour of video doesn't seem that bad.

I also have a dual 2.4 Ghz PC and I've taken 18 hours to encode a 2 hour movie before...

It totally depends on the kind of video your working with....in the past I've encoded a 4 hour video (single video track, no filters, etc.) and it took less than 30 minutes to finish.

bottom line to me is: Mac are very stable systems (not perfect though....my G5 gets stuck every now and again)

If you get a mac with faster specs than your pc then it will be faster...

I think a Mac mini might be a little underpowered for video work. Yes, it will work (get as much ram as possible), but it may not be a pleasant experience. I use Final Cut Pro and After Effects on a 3 year old Dual 1.8mhz G5 Power Mac and it works great. I've never had a crash. If I were you, I'd look at getting an older, but more powerful Mac.

You won't regret switching to a Mac for video editing.
