I have a 2013 Mac Pro with two external USB 3 hard drive enclosures. From time-to-time the USB drives unmount themselves and this is unacceptable. I added a high quality powered hub that seems to help but I still see the issue if plugged directly into the CPU. The external cases are self powered.

I am considering a TB enclosure but would like to know if the disconnect issue has been seen using TB? The drive SMART reporting is also not available via USB - is it available via TB?

I own an Akitio Thunder Quad Mini enclosure for my data and video need and an Akitio NT2 USB3 for Time Machine.

Both connected to a nMP.

Suddenly the USB one disconnect and cause the system to show the error that I have no correctly ejected the drive.

Never had an error on the Thunderbolt one.

USB drives are prone to this. While Thunderbolt doesn't seem to share USB's propensity to dismount, the connectors themselves will fall out if looked at funny.

No idea on SMART reporting.
