Hello, fellow community members. I wanted to share that switching to a USB-C cable fixed the issue of my MacBook Pro's battery draining during sleep. My model is a build-to-order 16-inch MacBook Pro from 2021 with the M1 Max chip.

Similar to many other users, I have been experiencing the issue of losing around 10% of battery life per night (18:00 to next day 09:00 to be exact) when the lid of the machine is closed. The issue was there from stock macOS Monterey to today's latest Ventura.

I have also attempted the fixes discussed in the forum, but unfortunately, they did not seem to work for me:

  • use pmset to disable TCP Keep Alive and Power Nap
  • tinker other pmset or system settings
  • install macOS 12.2.1 update which was released to fix an issue of batteries would drain when the computer is in sleep mode and has Bluetooth enabled
  • turn off Wi-Fi / Bluetooth / wireless accessories before sleeping
  • remove USB peripherals before sleeping

I tried all of those solutions and various combinations of them, but none of them seemed to work for me. However, one day, I brought my MacBook Pro on a business trip and noticed that the battery did not drain during that time. It took me several weeks to realize that the key difference was the charger and cable that I used during the business trip were different from the stock ones.

For the past 3 months, I have been conducting tests. The following are my observations.

  1. remove the MagSafe cable, connect a USB-C cable to the stock charger and to the Mac.
  2. restart the Mac and continue my everyday routine
  3. the battery usage was reduced to 1-2% per night
  4. when connected to an external monitor using USB-C to DisplayPort cable, and another USB-C cable connected to the monitor's built-in USB hub and
  • the monitor is in sleep mode, the battery usage was 2-3% per night
  • the monitor is turned off using its button, the battery usage was 5-7% per night
  1. the draining issue did not come back, after various system settings changing, software update and Security Response installing, rebooting, and even switching back to the MagSafe cable.
  2. by continue using the MagSafe cable for a few weeks, the draining issue happens again - I failed to log what key changes have been made
  3. by switching to a USB-C cable, the draining issue was fixed again - this was my observation yesterday

I understand that this is a workaround, and ideally, it should be Apple who resolves or at least provides an explanation for this issue. If the workaround has worked for you or if you have made other discoveries, I would appreciate it if you could share them with me by replying to this thread.

I’m a little confused so sorry if I somehow missed something super obvious. It’s draining while connected to the MagSafe charging cable? The charging cable is supposed to keep it charged.

My MacBook Air will go into optimize charging mode and bring it down to 80% if I leave it plugged in for a long time but other than that it stays fully charged. I would take this thing back to Apple if the battery is draining while it’s plugged into the charger.

It's draining while not connected to a power source.

Perhaps I should test it by leaving the machine charging overnight 🤔.

Maybe it’s somehow losing current going back into the adapter, but that seems weird. I wonder if MagSafe has more connections than USB-C and somehow one of them is draining power into the adapter. Just curious why do you unplug the adapter but leave MagSafe plugged in?

Apologies. English is not my mother tongue. Just to clarify: every evening before I close the lid, I remove the MagSafe connector from the MacBook Pro.

If I was testing with the USB-C cable, I remove the USB-C connector from the MacBook Pro. Hope this conveyed my meanings.
