Hey folks, I need some opinions. I’ve got a 3rd gen 12.9 inch iPad Pro that I got in February. It’s pretty sweet and was the perfect thing for my then-life. I’m a teacher — in those days I needed something lightweight to bring to work for email etc. I’ve got a 27” iMac at home that I do more heavy-lifting tasks on. The Pro was the perfect little laptop replacement, for my (at the time) basic needs.

Fast forward to now — I teach virtually — a bunch of 9 year olds on Zoom every day. My desktop works great, but I’m chained to my desk because the Pro can’t handle so many kids on Zoom, screen share, 2nd camera share, etc. Also, I’m thinking it might be nice to take advantage of the situation and road trip.

So, I’m trading in my desktop for a MacBook. My question (finally) is if I should swap out my iPad Pro. Now that I’m not trying to replace a laptop with it, it would be nice to have something a little smaller. I figure I could sell the Pro and get about what I’d need to buy the new Air. But is that a bad idea? Is my 3rd gen pro a better device than the new Air?

Your MacBook (Pro?) would solve the portability that the 12.9 iPP gives you, so unless you want that large of a slate but still want a tablet for even easier and handier portability, the Air would seem to handle that.

Once I got away from desktops some twenty years ago, I’ve bought notebook computers with enough power to satisfy my needs. I’ve not yet found an iPad that can easily replace my MBP, but my 10.5” iPP can sub when it has to and is simply a handier device for doing many things I would have done on my MBP (web searches, ebooks, reading PDF’s, displaying music [forScore and OnSong, etc.]).

So, yes, I like the idea of an Air 4 and a 16” MBP. Add an external monitor to your desk and enjoy the extra portability. I doubt you would miss much replacing the 12.9 with the Air but the extra size and weight.
