Does anyone have any experience/opinion with the Syba Combo RAID Caddy ?

Looks like a nice clean way to add a couple SSDs to a MP. I know these solutions usually have a couple Cons to go along with the Pros. I'd like to add a second SSD to my Velocity Solo X2 but don't really want to string any more wires around inside my box.

I've heard good things about them. I've used Syba products before and never had any problem with them. One was a five port Sata-II Raid card that did it's job perfectly in my old media server.
 
I'm using the Syba caddy (the one with both the red plastic caddy as well as includes two other SATA-3 ports on it - this card runs at PCIe 2.0 using 2x lanes) on an MP4,1 with a Samsung 840 250G SSD with no problems at all to report.

It's bootable and drives are recognised both in OSX 10.8.4 and Win7 under bootcamp.

They have two caddy models. Get the card that runs with the 2x lanes - a wise investment.

Thanks for the info. Everything I've read so far sounds very positive.

I'd buy one today if I could but I've scoured the web and everyone is out of stock. Not even a used one on ebay. Very strange. :confused:

I was able to find a couple of the discontinued older 1x lane cards. However I'll wait for the 2x to become available.

I think that model in dr stealth's post is the 1x version.

The 2x version has "hyperduo" capabilities (aka fusion drive) thus supports 2 SSDs and 2 HDDs (total of 4 SATA3 ports on the card - 2 in the caddy and 2 on the top of the board).

Because you can put 4 sata devices on it - hence they built it w/ requirement for 2x PCIe lanes to maximise the throughput. The other card just runs with a single PCie 1x lane.... Which is still probably "fast enough" anyways. :)

Yea, I'm looking for the newer version with 2x and 4 ports. The 1x is on Amazon but no 2x anywhere.

Reason for the product being discontinued:
I asked the same question to the higher ups and they just told me it was EOL which is confusing because the product was released at the beginning of the year.

It may have been discontinued because the demand for more RAID controller cards outnumbered the demand for this caddy design dramatically according to the sales.

As much as we wanted a new product replacement soon, there is currently no ETA when the next version will be made according to the information I have received.

I was just going to post the same message I received from them. Even the tech is confused/baffeled as to why the item was only available for a couple months. Bummer....

I have tried the Sonnet Tempo SSD Pro PCI-E card. Didn't work well. No startup options, some apps could not be installed, wasn't able to install Windows via bootcamp... a mess. Returned it after 2 days of trying.

That card which is mentioned here seems to be an option for me also. Or I will go with the OWC accelsior.
 
Ive been searching worldwide for this card for about 3 weeks and haven't found one yet. Anyone who says they have it in stock, doesn't.

I did pick up a Syba SI-PEX40057 which is also based on the 88SE9230 chipset. I need more SSD's first. :cool:

can you give any feedback on the SI-PEX40057? any issues? can you boot from it? sleep?
