Symbols/icons missing in OS X 10.8

Hi!

I looking for help with this problem: Icons are missing all over the system (menu bar, system settings, finder, see attachment). I have no idea what could have caused this. I tried the following:

* File system check (no errors)
* Virus scan (nothing found)
* Deleting/Moving all .plists from /Library/Username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.*
* I have not installed any software that should alter those symbols (SIMBL or alike).

I would appreciate any help!

Do you run the latest version (10.8.3)?

Yes, there were restarts (problem exists for days/weeks now).

Yes, 10.8.3, up to date.

I didnt expect it to be a virus, but checked nevertheless.

I saw others with similar problems and tried all the possible solutions I could find. A web search didnt help me

Hmmm that is indeed odd, you could always do like a reinstall or something akin to that.

Check this folder:

/System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources

That's where all the system icons are stored. Maybe something you installed tried to edit this and broke or deleted it. My main guess would be that possibly permissions were accidentally edited. You could check this by opening terminal and typing:

cd /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources
ls -al

If all the .icns files don't show -rw-r--r-- in the far left column then something is wrong but easily fixable. If this is the problem just type:

chmod 644 /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/*.icns

If files are missing then you'll need to reinstall or get them from someone else. There are 256 item in my folder so I would assume that's standard.

in the open files and ports tab when you inspect Finder in Activity monitor?

Maybe one of the plist files for your language is damaged or something?

I'm sorry but I really don't have much else of an idea what's causing it, but those are definitely the icons that aren't showing up for you.

Do they show up on a guest or other user account on the same system?

You said that you made file system check, but did you made permission check/repair? I found this problem on another mac forum, somebody had the exact same problem on 10.8.3, and permission repair fixed it for him.

It shouldn't - "Open Files and Ports" in Activity Monitor can contain files the process needs to read (and/or) write to at the moment you went to check.

In this case, the contents of the images would likely get loaded into RAM, and therefore the files shouldn't stay as open.
