iPod Sync / backup iphone automatically BUT not ipod when connect to itunes

• I have and iphone and and ipod running on a mac
  
• When i plug in my iphone i would like itunes to back it up (which i believe it does as part of the sync)
  
• I do not want it to sync my ipod.
  
• In the preferences panel, it only has the option to sync ipods and iphones.

How can i get it to backup the iphone automatically?

i'm not by itunes right now but as i remember, it disables automatic syncing...
