So, after a bit of tweaking in my calendars (setting all the events to the iCloud calendar) I've got everything to sync up between the iCal app on my Mac and the calendar on iCloud.com but my iPhone is only showing events from September 15 onwards - the last 30 days I guess - and nothing before. Is there any way I can enable it to show me events from before that or is this just the way it is?

Behind you!
Go to Settings —> Mail, Contacts, Calendars and scroll to the bottom. Just above Reminders, you'll have Calendars. Tap 'Sync' and you're away.

By the way, it's worth going through the settings for everything one time. It doesn't take particularly long and you're bound to find loads of stuff that you can tweak to your liking. :)
