Both myself and wife use Google Mail with Mac Mail. It does not appear that clearing Mail off one device using the Mail application, clears it off all the devices. Is that because we are using Google Mail? What I'd like to have happen is if I clear Mail off one device, it will clear off all devices.

Any suggestions, how-tos, or links would be appreciated! :)

How do you have gmail set up in your mail client? If it's set up as POP it won't sync.

Thanks for answering!

This is what happened... My wife cleared a bunch of mail off her phone in the Mail app, but when she went to her ipad, she said that mail was still there.

Let me check, I believe it's setup for imap, but when I looked at her iphone and don't see a settings that control this. I wonder if it is the settings at Google that do? Some online research is in order.

Update: I went to this techrepublic page and followed the instructions. My phone appeared to be configured correctly, however I ended up on this google page which had a note:

Mail will archive your Gmail messages instead of deleting. Learn more

But the "learn more" page appears to be outdated. With the goal of keeping everything synched, this quote seems like a bad thing.

So let me ask what are people using besides "Mail" that does a good job of keeping their mail synched on various iOS devices? Anyone using the Google Mail App? I saw some bad reviews on it at the App Store. Thanks!

On my iPhone I do use Mail app for iCloud account only and Gmail app for gmail accounts. No problem with Gmail app: when I delete messages, they go to trash and I can clear trash and this syncs with web version. Though, I don't have Gmail app on my iPod Touch, but I can test today if sync works properly in Gmail app between iOS devices.

Maybe this will help you. I had some trouble with gmail on my iPhone because I couldn't delete the emails, only archive.
I did some google and found out that I needed to configure my gmail account on the iPhone to delete instead archiving. After changing that, worked like a charm!
Steps:
Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > "Your Gmail Acc" > Account > Advanced

Let me check this out. Does this mean if you tell it to delete on your iPhone, it will delete them everywhere else? Thanks!

Update: Found it. Now I'll wait and see if this fixes the issue. Thanks again!

Yup! That's right! Will move the deleted mail to gmail trash folder for all devices.

I wonder if that is what is happening on my gmail accounts? I'm going to change the setting on the iOS devices to Delete.

I've had the same issue that deleting them on the phone or iPad does not delete them in Mail on my MBP.

I've also had an issue that if I look at the Archived folder on the MBP that when I go back to inbox a whole bunch of messages that I previously deleted are in the inbox again.

Did this work for you? I am trying it out now also.

Also did you upgrade to Mavericks? There seems to be an issue with Mavericks and Mail:

I have not upgraded to Mavericks and I've not tested it. Just made the settings changes. I'll check it out in the near future.

Near Future: I sent my self a test message to Google. Found it on my Mac. Opened Mail in my iPhone and deleted test message. Back on my Mac I found it in the trash. Went to my iPad, opened mail and found the same message in the trash. Hopefully that means it works! :D

That makes two of us, that seems to be the trick with sending it to the trash as to sending it to archive!!!! Keeping fingers crossed!!!!

Still having Gmail issues

Every time I access one of the mail folders "On My Mac" for any reason about 220 messages that were previously deleted from my "Inbox" reappear in the inbox.

This is incredibly frustrating! I only keep messages that I still need to take action on in my Inbox so having a bunch of messages I don't need really interrupts my workflow. Anyone have any ideas regarding this?

it's a rMBP 15 that is 1 year old. Intel 2.7 Ghz Core i7 with 16 GB of memory.

The problems began after installing Mavericks. I believe that all the problem messages are from my Gmail IMAP accounts of which I have two. One for personal, one for business.

If you are just talking about Mail on your Mac, I am not an expert on this, but in "Mail" on your Mac, under Accounts, select your google account and check your Trash settings. Mine is set to move deleted mail to the Mail Trash Box and Delete after 1 month old. I'm not using Mavericks if that makes any difference? Don't know...

I had the same problem, I would read an email on my iPad, but when I went to my Mac it showed up as Unread.

Here's how I FIXED IT:

ON THE IPAD GO TO SETTINGS->MAIL->EMAIL ACCOUNT(in my case Gmail) ->Account->Advanced->Deleted Mail->Make sure Trash is set to go to Trash ON THE SERVER, not IN YOUR IPAD
