Sync OSX

Now that we're able to install osx to our lovely iPods, wouldn't it kick some major ass if we could syncronize our home directories!?

Not all of it though, because then the sync would be massive, but if we could for example sync our mail boxes, address book and bookmarks, we could take our own system with us anywere in our pockets! I for example would like to check out my mail using mail.app anywhere I can find a mac. it would make things so easy.. just startup the computer from the ipod and there you have almost the same system you have at home!

why doesn't apple already offer this?! throw in some thoughts...

I'm a command line guy, so I usually sync my data using Unison (install Ocaml using Fink before you try to compile it). Works fine for me. Would be nice to have a GUI for purposes like you mentioned.

This feature was supposed to be included in Panther, but it wasn't. When Panther was previewed at WWDC last year, "Home On The iPod" was one of the features.

Your home directory would be copied/installed to your iPod, and then you could take it with you. For instance, I could put the home directory from my iBook onto my iPod, go over to the eMac lab here at school, plug in my iPod, and login to have access to all my stuff.

No one knows why this feature didn't make it into Panther. Maybe it'll be a part of 10.4.

Of course the three things you say you want to sync are .Mac in an nutshell. This may be why they don't want to include it. They many think this is best served though buying .Mac...using mail server to check web based .mac mail, syncing bookmarks so you can use your home bookmarks on ANY computer instead of just a mac which is what you are suggesting, and address book just the same...any computer to send email, bookmarks or address book stuff.

but it's not quite the same as starting up with your own settings and preferences.. also I'm not interested in paying $99 a year for 100mb of disk space on the internet and such. I actually took the .mac 60 day trial, but haven't had too much use for it. also changing my primary email address to .mac would be a problem.

ps. and instead of the 100mb space for web pages and such, I get 1gb space from the finnish macintosh user group (fimug), so no need for 100mb either.

darn.. I know nothing about this stuff, so it pretty much outrules this option I'd like to use iSync to do this for me..

Déjà Vu

I found that this app can do the job pretty much the way I want it.. I can scedule the backups etc. so now I have a stripped (not very much any apps) osx on my iPod I can use at work and it'll sync the address book, mail and safari daily.

still it would be nice if I could do it with iSync.

I agree that Home on iPod would be very cool.
However, I think there are a few kinks still to be ironed out with the Syncing process.
For some reason, my Contacts won't sync onto my iPod. One in particular that I have just added so I know should be there -I've tried deleting and re-entering it, and giving it an email address (it didn't have one) but nothing - it will not appear on the iPod.
And there is 300MB of free space.
Any ideas?

try resetting your device in isync - that should first erase everything and then put it all back. if there's some random error, it should get fixed.

Tried it. It just removed all the contacts from my iPod, leaving only the sample one. Is my only option going to be to manually transfer the vCards? What is going on here?
