Anyone else seeing iTunes crash repeatedly while syncing with their :apple: TV, or am I just seeing an isolated problem?

System: PPC Mac Mini with fresh install of OS X, 10.4.9 - System update is up to date.

The error report shows nothing in particular other than it was syncing.

Sync settings
  • All podcasts (all video) - about 6 or so shows with multiple episodes each
  • All photos - over 4000
  • All movies
  • No music, TV shows

I am suspecting the photos are the problem because I use a shared library on an external volume. I am going to try to disable photo syncing tonight.

I have tried rebooting the :apple: TV but not resetting to defaults - which will be my last ditch effort to kill this problem before investing in a better mini.

Anyone else seeing this behavior?

I suspect this is an iTunes problem, not an AppleTV problem.

I've had 0 problems with my AppleTV, but my iPod will fail to sync every now and then. Reconnecting it fixes that. I would disable syncing of everything but, say, one music playlist, and see if that works. If it does, slowly re-introduce all the other content and see what crashes it. Good luck...

Itunes crashes when syncing photos to apple tv

I'm having a similiar problem - When I atttempt to sync a iphoto folder to apple tv, itunes crashes, when i restart the app it immediatly crashes again. The only way I can keep it open is by turning off syncing in apple tv but then this wipes everything from the apple tv drive - frustrating! - Any ideas???

I've not had any issues with syncing. My AppleTV is set to sync All Music, All Photos, 1 TV Series and No Movies and it's never crashed, let alone doing it repeatedly.

My Music is stored on an external drive connected to my PowerBook, but my photos are stored on the internal HD.

I'm syncing from a 2.16 macbook pro internal drive and itunes is crashing when I shift from streaming to synching. If i go through each of the tabs and turn off syncing music, tv shows and then select synch photo's: last roll and Apply, it crashes. This happens every time.

I definitely think its photo related. I am in the process of upgrading to a newer mini, so once I get it, I will report back.

I have similar problems whenever I tried to sync iPhoto with my video iPod. I have over 10k images in iPhoto, so I assume it's a software issue. I run into the same problem when I try to add my MP3 collection (over 30GB) to my iPod(60GB), so the problem must be with iTunes synching.

Hmmm...

New intel mini (CD 1.66) + iTunes 7.2 didn't crash last night while syncing. I kept all the same settings as before. Now since two variables have changed in the equation, I don't know who the culprit might have been. So, I'll let her run a few days and see if the syncing crash reimerges.

Any of you other crashers upgrade to 7.2 yet? Better or same?

Same problem, no solution in sight

Same as described herein, factory reset the AppleTV, reloaded... same problem. Yesterday, Apple replaced my AppleTV as the hard drive appeared to be failing (stuttering, lock-ups, etc). I was hopeful that the new AppleTV would not exhibit the same problem but it did immediately when I attempted to sync photo. Turn off photo syncing, no crash... turn it on... crash.

Looking forward to this getting fixed... (Though I've never been able to get anyone to sit through my photo viewing sessions... perhaps it's for the best!)

Cheers,

jim

Same Problem - has anyone found a fix?

Both my iMac and macMini experience the same problem. With an almost empty photo library or a 18,000+ photo library. The Apple TV works great otherwise. I guess a related question would be has anyone had this combo work?

(iLife 08 both machines, all patches/updates installed)

Solution found

I figured out that I had old AVI movie files from an early digital camera that had been readable by Quicktime when I imported them into iPhoto years ago but since then, Quicktime no longer could read them.

I got VisualHub and converted each one to MP4 and removed the old AVI files from the iPhoto library and no more crashes!

Good luck.

Jim
