I'm loving my new iPad and especially the photos app, but I'm running into a weird limitation of the faces sync. I initially synced just a handful of photo albums to my iPad but was disappointed to see that the iPad doesn't automatically sync the faces data from these selected photos. So I went back and synced the Faces albums for the people in my selected albums, but this time the iPad synced all of the pictures of those people, even photos outside of the selected albums.

Perhaps this a feature most people prefer, but for me I'm finding that I need to choose between having less data than I want and more data than I want, instead of having just the amount of data that i want.

Hmm...mine worked fine.

I initially had it select everything...then noticed it was 'optimizing for iPad' my whole 6000+ iPhoto library on my laptop. YOINKS! So I stopped it and selected 'most recent event'. I just checked and it has 305 pics. I hit the 'faces' tab and it has everyone at the the event. When I double-tap them the pictures with them are there...Is that what you meaning when you said they weren't automatically synced? Post on here what you mean...still playing with the photo app and, since my 5D takes HUGE pics, can already see the need for a batch converter (without the need to sync the iPad during the conversion).

Sir42, if you are big into photog keep in touch..it's one of my fav hobbies.

Cheers!

Hmm, this is the problem I seem to having:

I have about 6,000 photos in my iPhoto as well. But let's say I only want the following albums synced to my iPad:

Album A - 20 photos
Album B - 10 Photos
Album C - 30 Photos
Total Photos: 60

If I sync just these albums, my iPad doesn't display the associated Faces data for these pictures.

So I went back and synced the Faces for the people in these photos, but the problem is, my faces data contains pictures that are outside of these three albums, so when I synced the faces data I got:

Person 1 - 800 photos
Person 2 - 500 photos
Person 3 - 300 photos
Total Photos: 1600

So instead of just the 60 photos I want, I now have 1660 photos on my iPad. I wish I could just sync the faces data from just the 60 photos I actually want on my iPad.

Perhaps I'm just overlooking an option somewhere...

You cannot do this. You won't be able to get Faces for ONLY the photos you checked. It's all or nothing.

Hmm..sucks getting old..my brain is fuzzy after lunch...ZZzzzzz!

I think what I noticed is in the 'faces' section I selected everyone (Example Yvonne had 221 photos) but it only transferred the ones form "most recent event"...So I wound up with only say, 53 photos of Yvonne. (Again, I'm a little zoned at work). I think that's what I did. You near your iPad? I'll try to get to it in a few (everything but iPad is packed in my backpack)...

Cheers!

Well perhaps I am in the minority on this one, but I think it would be nice to have access to Faces sorting on the iPad without syncing entire Faces albums. Especially for users with 16gb ipads who will be looking to save space.

It seems as if iOS 4 automatically syncs faces data only with the associated events/albums that the user syncs to the iPhone. This is definitely a welcome improvement.
