Syncing Issue

I'm traveling and i keep all my media on an external at home, I want to add some pics to my iphone but i'm afraid that if i do it will synce the other stuff to and there will be problems becasue it can't find my music. I know i can disable the music syncing but then will it just ignore the music i have on there or just erase it?
