Syncing to my Apple TV from itunes seems extremely slow why?

Syncing to my Apple TV from itunes seems extremely slow why? I have a super fast wireless connection. It seems that it is taking forever to do the first sync. Is this normal? like to copy one movie over from my hd, it is taking like nearly 25-30 min? This can't be right can it?

Is there a way to speed it up? Or did I miss some settings somewhere? I am in the middle of installing this new hardware. It found my wireless network and accepted my pw, and it is syncing now but it is really taking forever. Any advice?
 
What size is the video that you're trying to sync?

If it's quite a few Gb I would have thought 25-30 mins would be reasonable to be honest!

Why not let it fully sync overnight - at least that way it's got the time to do it all properly without eager users interfering :D

Do your first sync wired. Move your Apple TV to where your computer is and connect it via ethernet.
 
Do you have a cordless phone around? Try to turn it off or remove the batteries of both phone and base and then check the transfer speed on Activity Monitor. I can move files to my apple tv at 3MB/sec but when the phone was on it was going to 30kb/sec.
 
Are all the devices on your network "super fast"?

If you have 4 802.11n devices, but one 802.11b device, whilst that device is on the network the whole transfer speed drops until it is removed.

Therefore check your devices, and check no-one is leeching from your network.

Otherwise...wait. Mine takes an age to sync.

A sync between two wireless devices can only use half of your bandwidth, because you have to transmit from one device to your router, and then again from your router to the 2nd device.

You have to either wait it out, or as some people have said, do a wired sync which should go much faster. Connecting one of your devices directly to the router, will also double your speed, since you only have to have one wireless connection...
 
I got my first sync done. It went ok, but a bit slower than I thought it would. However the files that were being moved is a few movies at 2.0 to 2.5 gb each. but only like 3 of them, but I have a ton of video podcasts that I should have gone thru and got rid of as it took up quite a bit of space on my ATV.

I only have a 40 GB ATV and it took up more than half. I already deleted the podcasts(video) that I did not want to keep as I have not seen all of them yet.

I did do a updated sync and it went faster. So I guess I am alright with everything. Thanks for all the replies.

When you say you have a "super-fast wireless connection", what does that mean exactly? Are you using an "n" router? Are there any "g" or "b" devices connected? I use an "n" router and it only takes a matter of minutes to completely fill a 40GB tv.

I have a g wireless network router. So you are telling me that a "n" router is much faster? maybe it would benefit me to go out and get a new updated router. what do you think?
 
Well, sure, upgrading to an n router will definitely increase your syncing speed. The 802.11n standard is theoretically 5x faster.

where in activity monitor can you check the speed? Im having problems syncing.


i just synced to tv shows they appear on the apple tv but if I switch itunes off and then turn it back on it starts to sync the same shows again??
then tonight it said the apple tv could not sync and to check my firewall ports but my firewall is not on?
 
this could be a more series problem than I thought, I just started syncing some programs to the atv, after a couple of minutes the atv just disapeared off of itunes???
anyone know what's happening??

in the atv the file is their with the correct time ie 42 minutes but then when I hit play it says its unable to play!
the program plays correctly in itunes??
 
If possible, I'd wire it and it'll be even faster, considering you can get a full duplex connection. Wireless communication is always half duplex.
 
First sync should always be wired, especially if you have a large library. In fact any kind of heavy duty file transfer should never be done through a wireless network, unless you are prepared to wait a LONG time.
