I just bought a 27" iMac and i'm wondering if I need to back up my system on an external hard drive in addition of backing my files on iCloud.

Yes definitely. iCloud does not back up all your apps and settings, plus if something were to ever go wrong with iCloud you could lose everything. It is not a good idea to depend in just one setup/service for your data.

I would grab a USB3 external drive and use that with the included Time Machine backup to keep a full local backup.

I also suggest using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper for creating fast, bootable backups. Look into using BackBlaze online backup as well.

Always make a backup of your backup.

I use Backblaze, TimeMachine, and Carbon Copy Cloner, along with having some files manually copied onto other external drives.
