i'd like to develop a simple background application that is essentially a black full screen rectangle who's alpha value is altered by the brightness setting. i find the lowest brightness of my iMac is certainly not what i would refer to as dim. i know there are apps circulating now that have the same functionality, but i haven't found one that works with system brightness.

is it even possible to receive notifications from the system brightness?

Use Notification Watcher:
http://www.tildesoft.com/Programs.html

I just tried it on 10.5.8, and it shows distributed notifications arriving as I change brightness in the prefpane. It shouldn't be too hard to take it from there. You can even see how Notification Watcher does it, by looking at its source.

Whether to rely on this is a different question. The notification values may change. Heck, it may already be different on 10.6. I didn't try it there.
