lucida grande to helvetica neue, the same system font as ios 7/8. this should not have been a surprise; the writing's been on the wall now for a year now.

If you can change the system font (I don't know how), change it to Wingdings for a week. I think you'll change your mind about Helvetica.

The writing has been on the wall for a LONG time now, actually. Starting with (IIRC) Leopard, iCal began using the Helvetica font; Address Book/Contacts had Helvetica since at least Snow Leopard, and Dashboard in Tiger had Helvetica used in the widgets. So, for a long time now, Helvetica has been used sparingly within OS X. I think it was around Snow Leopard/Lion when Helvetica became a bit more prominent, though. That's something Apple does - gradually introduce something new, use it more and more, then introduce it full-on.

We're at that point now, where Helvetica is the primary system font.

As to how to change it - I'm not sure. I'm sure someone ingenious will find a hack to change the system font, but even so, it's not guaranteed to be completely seamless.

Helvetica is good for metro sign or for printed material. for computer screens it sucks, but it sucks so much more if that screen is not retina dense...

Horrible, horrible decision. I will stick to mavericks. I think mavericks is the new snow leopard, in the sense is that is the good last old best version of osx. Lios and mountain lion were not very good, but the beginning of something. Yosemite seems the same, the beginning of something, but not there yet.

Stay in mavericks or get a retina machine or a 4k screen, or both... New OSX is made for us to spend $$$$$$$$$$$$$.

I don't have Yosemite to try it on, but TinkerTool lets you change the font in Mavericks. I used it to change my font to Helvetica Neue when iOS 7 came out. It was ok, but I quickly learned some things in OSX and third-party apps are sized specifically for the system font and look weird when it changes.

Tinkertool 4.9. Change to whatever font you want.

I just tried it, got a message on startup saying "Unrecognized OS Version... TinerTool has not been tested with this system version. For safety reasons, the app will not run."

So, can't tell as of right now.
