Mac OS X does a pretty good job of maintaining itself, though sometimes permissions get corrupted. If this ever happens, you can use the Repair Permissions tool in Disk Utility to fix it. It's even smart enough to make sure its maintenance scripts get run if the computer happens to be off or asleep at the time they're supposed to run - if this happens, the scripts run when the computer is next turned on or awakened from sleep.
