I've always been curious about the 'order' of the System Prefs, why do they display in such a random way. They're not alphabetical and I don't see ANY logical reason for the arrangement...anybody know the 'history' or reason for this?

Not sure, but it's also a non-issue. As you can see, all you have to do is start typing to find what you want (or just use CMD + spacebar without even opening System Preferences). Applications are in alphabetical order, but I still have trouble putting my eye right on the one I want sometimes - I just search instead.
 
Open System Preferences.
Go to the "view" menu and choose "organize alphabetically"...
