Hey guys do your system preferences change to the default settings whenever you restart or shut down your iMac. I'm referring to sounds settings and energy saver settings. I notice my output balance changes, maybe because i'm connected to an external hi-fi via audio out. But my microphone input level contantly changes back to around the 3/4 level instead of full which i set it at. Also the auto dimming function before my mac sleeps function keeps coming on by itself! Even when it shows its uncheck! So, i have to check and uncheck it to prevent my system from auto dimming. And this same problem occurs whenever i restart the mac. Maybe you guys could help me check it out?

I also noticed that the dimming and sound issue also occurs on my girlfriend's macbook.

I think there are various settings available.

For instance if you set your volume how you want. Then insert some earphones you can then set the volume how you want. Then when you take out the earphones, the level will revert back to the settings you set earlier when the earphone were not plugged in. Saving you from constantly adjusting the volume.

Clever eh? :D

My hi fi has been constantly connected to my mac throughout. I've never unplugged it. But the settings keep reverting back. Especially the balance. Since my left speaker is nearer to me i tend to make the volume softer on the left and louder on the right. However once i restart my mac. It goes back to 50/50. Weird i would say.

you might replace the PRAM battery and see if that helps. They're cheap and readily available at RadioShack.
