system services using large amount of data

I hadn't encountered this issue until iOS 10. Ive been getting the notifications that I'm getting near the end of my data cap etc etc

so I've been resetting my data usage on my phone, this month, system services has used 995 mb. When going into that further, something called DNS services has used 768 mb.

My question to you all, 1. is that normal? & 2. what is DNS services?

I've been seeing a substantial increase in data usage under iOS 10.

768mb? That's not normal at all .. for comparison system services has used 21.1mb and DNS services has used 1008kb in the last 11 days on my iphone 7

I saw a few threads on this and reset my cellular use 15 days ago. System services used 35.6mb of data since then.

I wonder if its just a glitch that it says that's what is using the data, or if maybe I need to do a restore

1. Normal can be anything depending on your phone's current usage rates.

2. DNS services is basically phone book IP Address that the iPhone keeps on hand to call in for an another address. Also has to do with your carrier settings. When you use your browser, the iPhone pings the DNS Server for a request of an IP Address. This data is transmited back to your browser which then loads the appropiate pages.

I would expect to see over 700mb data used by dns services if the op had used half a terabyte of mobile data. Something on his phone is continually requesting dns data in my opinion.

My data allotment resets on the 26 so ill reset the settings and see what happens

I don't think a forced restart does anything good but reset network settings would be my first try.

I haven't reset my stats for 3 months and DNS services is at 43mb so I'd say it's far from normal!
