Months ago I got a system settings alert (Dock; red circle next to the gear wheel) which I believe came after downloading a picture, but I can't be sure. I've gone through the entire System Settings listing more than once and nothing is amiss, or I should say, nothing is flagged. I don't have any virus cleaners, Mac add-ons or any such nonsense. I did not have Malwarebytes at the time, now do, but it caught nothing (it seems largely useless in my past experience, anyway).

What could it be? I guess it's harmless considering the passage of time, but it's stuck there and simply irritating to me.

Screenshot for clarification:

Are you still running Ventura?
If so its the Upgrade to Sonoma notification.
Edit: Your sig doesn't show up on iOS so I didn't realise you had the most recent iMac.
Doesn't it tell what the notification is for at the top left of the SS window?

Check under iCloud settings. Sometimes, it require you to logon again for all services to work.

Sonoma 14.5 it says. SS is an acronym for screenshot? All my updates are on automatic download. Thanks though.

As to iCloud, another good suggesting, yes, they are always trying to upgrade my storage and warning it's full. I did check, but I'll delve into it further now that you mention it.

Every time I have seen this, it is always a software update. Either MacOS or Safari. Sonoma 14.6.1 is now the current version. Do the update.
