So here I was, importing one single album into iTunes. Not so big a task, especially for my 2.33 gHZ core 2 duo Macbook Pro. But what do you know? iTunes hangs. 30 minutes later, the system kernal panics. I restart my system, chuckling to myself as, maybe Sunn O))) was just too much for my baby to handle. I push the power button again, the system turns on, and then gets to the blue screen just before 'loading OS X' comes up.

And that was it. It just sat there, for 10 minutes. Just the blue screen. Finally, OS X booted up, but it took finder nearly 4 minutes alone just to pop up at the top of the screen. The dock was unresponsive to my mouse roll-overs. Once the dock woke up, I tried spotlighting 'Caffeine' to bring up the program. Spotlight sits there, and sits there, and...well, sits there. I backspace out of the search, and slowly type 'ca'. It continues to search, but nothing.

I boot up Disk Utility, repair disk permissions. Restart. Still slow. Less hang at the blue screen, but finder still remains unresponsive for 4-5 minutes. I boot up IceClean, have it perform it's maintenance tasks, restart. Nothing. I boot up Onyx, run the entire Automation procedure, and restart.

What do you know? Still no improvement. I should mention at this point that at each 'restart' step, I restarted twice just to make sure that all of the scripts, procedures, and repairs were fully completed before trying another set.

This bothers me quite a bit, considering that before this crash the total boot time, from the moment I tapped the power button til the time Finder was totally usable and spotlight was usable was 30 seconds. Now it's 5 minutes. On a windows system, i'd expect this kind of crap, but not for this system. I know for a fact it can do a hell of a lot better than what it's doing now, and that concerns me. Like a parent concerned that their child is a drug addicted slacker-brained loser.

So what else do you suggest, fellow Macbook Pro users? What can I do to get my system back to her former glory and speed?

A reinstall won't work if the problem is hardware or firmware based. I'm not sure what IceClean checks, but have you used Disk Utility to verify the drive? :)

The MJ is on this, so I probably should just step aside and let him do his thing (whatever that is). ;)

But I'd add my prediction that the problem stems from kernel panic having hosed the directory on your hard drive. You were right to try Disk Utility, but you ran the wrong test. You need to check the hard drive for errors. Disk Utility may or may not do the needed repair job, but at least you'll know if you require something stronger (a commercial disk repair application, such as DiskWarrior or TechTool).

Verified the disk

Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
%)
Checking Extended Attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK.
Mounting Disk

1 HFS volume checked
Volume passed verification

Noticed some odd behavior earlier today. .rar files were associated with Quicktime, betterzip acted like it was never opened, and when I played a game that I knew crashed when a certain button is used, it froze the laptop rather than just auto-force quitting like it used to. It did this twice in a row.

So something has changed that's really turned my OS X into a Windows XP rehash.

EDIT: Ok, i've had enough of this. I've really been rather paitent with this piece of **** but now i've had it. I uninstalled the programs 'Application Enhancer' and 'Shapeshifter', because they were two things I installed recently that I believed had alot to do with my system's complete instability. I was wrong. I used Appzapper to remove them, emptied them from the bin, and restarted. What I got was a 2 minute startup (longer than the 45 second startup I was getting before I uninstalled them. Thanks to the Onyx program I was able to get a more tolerable restart.), and when I launched iTunes it bounced 8 times, beachballed, and took 3 minutes to start up. Launching firefox and adium also took 20-30 bounces a piece before they launched, and also beachballed during the process of getting them up and running.

Checking the drive was worth a try. Now we're back to the root cause of your kernel panic, which odds-on is a hardware problem. Have you added any RAM?

No sir, I haven't. Everything is as it was straight from the Factory.

Core 2 Duo 2.33 gHZ
2 GB RAM
160 GB HDD
X1600 256 MB
15" screen

It's the revision before Santa-Rosa, in case that would have any difference.

EDIT: I apologize for going off in my post above. I was turned down from Apple phone support because I didn't pay the extra $300 for AppleCare support, so apparently I can't speak to a human being about my situation. And that just really got under my skin.

I had a similar problem yesterday, i called apple care today and the lady walked me through a few processes that were already mentioned above. She could not do anything for me over the phone, so she told me i would have to reinstall the operating system. She told me i could make a copy of my hard drive on another mac, but i don't have access to another mac. I told her this and she said take it to an apple store and they will do it for you. She didn't mention that it costs $50. So i took it down to my local apple store and luckily my operating system did not need to be reinstalled. The genius did something else to it. So i would recommend taking it down to apple if you cant fix it.

I wish they would have told you what they did to fix it, because the closest Apple Store to me is over an hour's drive away. That's just not feesable for me.

Your out of phone support time, but you are still within the year right? before you smash it to bits you can take it into an Apple store.

ahh sorry, he clicked on a program that he got from what looked like an external HD he had. It looked pretty complicated to me, i dont think i could have explained it to you even if he told me what he did. He told me however to leave the computer alone while performing software updates. I think i got the kernal panic because i was asking too much for my macbook to do at one time. You can read my thread i created in the Buying Tips, and advice section. It further explains what im talking about.

Well, my system is going to complete hell. Most of today, all it's done is have the applications crash without warning. Miro? Can't watch my podcasts on it, it'd rather crash as soon as I pull the App up. Firefox? Can't surf the ****ing web with it. I open up a tab and it crashes. I go to gmail, it crashes, I go to ANY website, even http://www.something.com and it crashes. iTunes? **** that, no music for me. As soon as I click on the icon on my dock, it crashes. I can't call Apple, since i'm not 'eligible' for phone support. So I have to sit here and suffer as my system becomes inable to do even the slightest of tasks. Human contact would be nice, to have someone from Apple able to tell me what the **** is going on. But i'm not allowed to have that, because I couldn't afford $300 more for the AppleCare protection plan. And i'll be spending that kind of gas money getting to the nearest apple store from here.

Way to go on this one, Macbook Pro. Way. To. Go.

No need to be so bitter mate. Have you tried this yet:

This afternoon I shut the system down, popped out both pieces, but one in and restarted. No difference in speed, but the programs seemed to not crash. Put the other one in, still no speed difference, but no program crash. I took them both out, and put them both back in at once, and I noticed a slight boost in startup, but still not as fast as it was before the kernal panic.

So has it crashed since reseating the RAM?

No crashes so far, which is good. But my laptop is still performing slowly while in OS X. Often times, when moving objects to and from the dock they move slowly (and in the case of an Adium window, it moved in slow mo like in the video where Steve Jobs first demo-d the animation) and programs still take more than above average load times. I still get the Beachball when opening iTunes, even if it does open eventually. I've had mixed results over the last few days, some times things just load faster and other times they're slow as a legless dog.

Something odd I noticed that I hadn't noticed before, though. When I ran Photoshop CS3 before this slowdown happened, it booted up within 3-4 seconds. After the slowdown started happening, when it took longer to load it mentioned that it was loading a PPC thing. Assuming this isn't something it normally loads, could this point to what's causing the slowdown?
