I've noticed this since 10.12.5 - for some reason, the volume of system sound effects keeps setting down to zero. I raise it up, but it ends up turned down again, after a while. Not sure when and what causes it. Note that this applies only to system sounds (the Alert sounds), not the output volume (I usually notice this when I erase a file or empty the Trash and don't hear the sound).

I tried resetting SMC and NVRAM to no avail.

I'm running Sierra 10.12.5 as I said, on MacBook Pro Touch Bar 15".

Anyone else has this issue?
[doublepost=1495465739][/doublepost]Also: I noticed that when I turn off the option to display the volume controls in the menu bar, it turns back on after restart.

I see this after almost every restart. I report to Apple feedback, but since it has persisted over many beta builds, it must not be high on their list to fix.

Heh, at least I'm not the only one. Are you talking about 10.12.5 betas?

I don't know if you were specifically talking about beta software here, but I'm currently seeing this in non-beta software (10.13.2). Exactly as you described: when emptying the trash, I notice there's no sound, and upon checking system preferences I find that system alert volume is turned down to zero (but 'volume' for non-system sounds, e.g. music, is not affected).

Yes, that happens to me on 10.13.3 still.
