System storage space slowly creeping up

I notice the system storage space slowly creeping up. I was about 11 GB a couple of weeks back, now showing 14.97 GB. How do I find out what is causing this? I *think* part of it may be downloaded software update (that is not installed yet), but I suspect that is only a small portion of the increase.

Running Sierra 10.12.1

If you want to find out what's eating up that extra space, do this:

First download a small, free utility called DiskWave:
https://diskwave.barthe.ph

Then, launch it.
You'll see what to do next.

TIP:
Go to preferences and make normally-invisibile files visible. Now you can "see" everything.

My 128GB early 2015 is the same. Why they shipped 128GB's I don't know, I have as much as possible on an external drive and the 'storage is almost full' alert flashes up constantly. More fool me for buying it.

I recently noticed similar and I discovered that it was iTunes, for some reason if you add your own Film/TV files to iTunes it counts as 'System Storage' and not 'iTunes' as it should, why it does this I don't know but it's clearly a fault with macOS and how it references storage sections.

I ended up deleting the films I had locally stored and that solved the issue, now the only local files are some documents, photos and iPhone apps, the rest is on my portable drive although I've still used a total of 40GB somehow, it's a lot better than 60GB for system storage alone!
