At my school, they started a one-to-one program where they gave all the teachers mac-book pros and all the students mac books. They're really great, but we might not get them back next year because the students never use them for what they're supposed to in class. Is there a way where a teacher's computer could see what all the students' computers were doing, like maybe a program that would monitor the network? They teacher's computer would have to be able to see all the student's in the school maybe, so they could monitor those in their class. Maybe if they looked at what was going through the router in the room, and determine what computer it was coming through? The students might hate me for busting them all, but it would worth it if we got to continue using our laptops.

ARD offers unobtrusive viewing of the screen with no control, the ability to obscure the screen during teaching and other command/control features for multiple Macs, not just one screen at a time as with "Screen Sharing."

What's wrong with ARD? I've used it too, and it does the job. Works over the internet too (have to configure routers tho) Why give up?

It's a little bit expensive, but it's admin-level software.

'Chicken of the VNC' does sort of the same thing too, and it's free, but a little more complex to set up.

Whats wrong with actually using/hiring an IT person who can setup the network in a way so as to restrict the student's access to certain things, including websites.

Seems like a no brainer....why complicate it by thinking you have scores of students laptops on ARD and have someone watching every moment for improper use!?

I re-read the OP.

He's one of the students who got a laptop. He wants to stop the other students from pissing about so that he can keep his own laptop.

I understand where you're coming from, and I'd probably feel the sameway myself, but there is nothing you can do about it.

As a student, you have zero say in admin policies. You could try having a word with the tech admin about blocking some websites but they probably alredy know about it. As a student, any tech people may view anything you say with suspicion.

Your best bet is to try telling a teacher you get on well with about how you feel about the whole project, and hope that your feedback gets passed on.

And start saving up for your own laptop.

You understood him i didn't DO you See the problem WITH no full stops when there are multiple sentences all in the same paragraph commas would also help sometimes but I guess they're no longer needed are they do you like chickens what about snakes i ate a green snake yesterday not a real one a lolly one that my mum saved me from my sister's netball game whoops i forgot to point out the random capitalisation of letters in words oh well

You hit it.
Being in IT myself and in a school district as well, it starts by setting things up right. And letting the teachers stare at a class full of laptops on their own laptop is dumb. Do they have legs? Wow, talk about a productivity killer. LET THEM TEACH! Even better, we set the screens so the teacher can see them from their desk. Plus the network overhead can be pretty high, especially if you have dozens of teachers staring slack-jawed at 30 laptops each. I have been repeatedly asked to allow this, and I will not until someone comes up with a valid reason. After 15 years I have heard none.
But the bottom line is to get the IT staff to set up the system right.

I do to, but Deep Freeze, while a great product, doesn't offer any kind of security. It's merely a way to keep the machines in pristine condition. So it's simply PART of an overall strategy for school IT.

Would FileVault, block this sort of stuff. I have it setup on my laptop, and it block people from even seeing my computer on the network at work. I can see them, but they can't see me.

If this doesn't work. would LittleSnitch, or something of the Sort?
