I seem to be having an issue where my whole computer has a stutter every few seconds. I've attached a video showing the stutter just from moving around a finder window.

Things I've tried:

-Fresh install macos big sur on a separate sata ssd. (running macos monterey on sm951 drive using generic pcie adapter before)
-updating opencore (0.7.9 -> 0.8.0)
-turn off hardware accel in chrome to compare if video stutters still (it did)

not sure if I remember this happening before or if it was an issue ever since I got the system.

Specs:

Mac Pro (Mid 2010)
2x X5670 2.93Ghz CPUs
96GB 1333Mhz OWC RAM (6x16GB)
AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT
512GB SM951 SSD on PCIe Card
SK Hynix 512GB SATA SSD
BCM943602CDP Wi-Fi/BT Card
Titan Ridge 2.0 TB3 Card

using martin lo's package for both installs

I originally noticed the issue watching videos. Then realized screensaver has it too.

Some thoughts on this:

Do you see numerous IO errors in the Console app? Could be read/write errors or other clues that help you diagnose the issue.

How full is your SSD? If it has less than 10% free space, consider upgrading to a larger SSD.

Do you have TRIM enabled? Consider disabling it so normal garbage collection does it’s thing.

Re-seat your ram modules.

Perform a SMC and NVRAM resets.

If still causing issues, consider utilities that can check ram, drives and other components. I use a combination of Apple Disk Utility (check and repair your drives), TechTool Pro (check and repair drives and can check a whole raft of other components), and DriveDX (SMART diagnostics for drives, and detailed stats on the different parts of your drives and usage).

OMG! I think I found the issue! I can't believe my feeling was correct.

So something I didn't mention, I am using a 30" Apple Cinema Display hooked up to my RX 5700 XT using Apple's mDP to Dual link DVI adapter (I bought this thing brand new last month for a lot of $$$).

Well, I switched to HDMI and a different display and I don't see anymore stuttering! Can this even be possible? I will message the seller regarding the adapter but it seems it's time for me to get rid of this 30" ACD and get something more modern not requiring adapters. My other adapter from Club3D didn't have this issue but I returned that one because of artifact issues. I just wish there was a silver or white monitor to match the mac pro.

Have you had your BootROM rebuilt? I know it's not the cause of this, but just curious...

Yes I have. It was the first thing I did before going OpenCore.

Yup, that'll definitely do it. Glad you figured it out, that video was..... interesting to say the least.

I've seen many people here using 30" ACD with their mac pro without issue so I'm assuming it's my adapter?

Either way I'm going to go with a 4K monitor. I've been trying to diagnose this issue for weeks and realized the last thing I changed was my adapter/display.

Only way to know for sure is to try another brand, or maybe even just another one from Club3d

Honestly I had issues with club3d one too (artifacts) so I think it's time for me to let go of this display. When I tested it using native DVI card it works fine. These adapters cause too many issues. I ordered a 4K monitor LOL

That's the best move you've made yet!

What'd you go with? LG?
No I went with this: https://www.amazon.com/Dell-S3221QS-Ultra-Thin-DisplayPort-Certified/dp/B08G8WMRRP/ref=sr_1_7?crid=2NV49OPZQW2BB&keywords=dell+4k+monitor&qid=1652306746&sprefix=dell+4k+monitor,aps,144&sr=8-7

Cost $379.99

Other one I was looking at was this one: https://www.amazon.com/LG-32UN500-W-Compatibility-Virtually-Borderless/dp/B08FPLLX6Y/ref=sr_1_7?crid=23NSXRACZSGCA&keywords=lg+4k+monitor&qid=1652306772&sprefix=lg+4k+monitor,aps,138&sr=8-7

Wanted to keep it under $400. I didn't go for a crazy one since I have a 4K TV and projector in the same room, I can run a second HDMI cable for those. This is for when I'm at the desk.

Make sure you test that Dell monitor very well...

I bought the S2722QC and it had a TERRIBLE (coil whine?) whine noise at all times as soon as I connected the power cable. It sounded similar to this (google search shows a lot of other folks did too)

I contacted Dell about getting a replacement, and Dell's warranty policy is that they will send you a refurbished/used/returned monitor free of charge. They did exactly that, and I had to send my new monitor to them, and the used/returned replacement still had the issue, along with being scratched, so I ended up returning it and just going with LG.

I don't think I'll ever buy Dell again after that, but don't let me discourage you!

I've had good luck with dell monitors so hopefully this one is fine. I definitely wouldn't want a refurbished for a new one. I'd probably return it.

My 30" ACD power adapter has coil whine as well so it will be nice getting rid of it all.

Looks like mine seems to be okay.

For anyone else ever looking at this issue, looks like new monitor on HDMI does not suffer from the stuttering issue.

Now to upgrade to RX 6800 next. I can get 6900 xt or 6800 xt for a good price but they will probably block my startech pcie nvme adapter in slot 2.
