and just one more what about ringtones? i go to phonezoo.com and make my own ringtones and then send them to my phone, is that possible with a tmobile iphone?

An iPhone will work with T-Mobile.
You will not have Visual Voicemail as that is an AT&T network service.
If you want to use all the other apps, a data package is handy, but not required.
If you live in an area with a lot of (free) WiFi hot spots, a data package would not be needed at all.
As for ringtones, the only "official" way to get them is either through iTunes or if you have a Mac, you can make your own in Garage Band.
phonezoo ringtones are not compatible.
There are tutorials here on how to make your own though.

Visual Voicemail

Visual voice mail is quite possibly the greatest change to come to cell phones in recent years and it's thanks to apple.

If you use an iphone on t-mobile you can get voicemails just like you would with any other cell fun. But if you have At&T you get visual voice mail. Visual voice mail is a simply a screen on the iphone that lists the name or number of the person who called you and the time...something like this:

Mom 9:40
Dad 10:20
Sister 12:00

What this means is when you have multiple voicemails you can choose the order you want to listen to them in. You don't have to listen to the voicemails consecutively and wait to get to the last one if that is the most important one. Also when you click on each name or number you can fast-forward or rewind the message just like a song on the ipod. If the person left you a number at the end of the message and you didn't write it down in time you can just fast-forward the message and get the number without having to listen to the whole message. Visual voice mail is truly amazing.
