Hi,
I have tried searching for my answer, but I didn't get very clear results.

I am new to this whole unlocking thing.

To the point, I am wondering if it is still possible to use a first generation iPhone on T-mobile. I thought I read a while back that t-mobile somehow blocked and prevented this from happening again.

thanks!

Awesome, thanks so much!!!

This is for a friend who just dunked her brand new phone on accident, so this should be enough to tide her over.

Well, she had a Mytouch 3G that she absolutely loved, which she got for free as a going away present from her boss. I have to say it was a pretty cool phone. She is absolutely bummed.

Anyways, will all the basic utilities of the iPhone still work after jailbreaking and unlocking (besides visual voicemail). Can she still download games and so on from the App Store?

Yes after unlocking it with Pwnage Tool, all of the features will work the same except Visual Voicemail. My iPhone 3G is unlocked on T-mobile and it works perfectly except the 3G isn't compatible. The app store and syncing will function the same.

Super cool, you are so helpful.

So, do I use the full Pwnage application? I ask because I also saw an app called quickpwn.

Does the pwnage tool come with all the necessary custom ipsws or whatever they are called, or do I have to download the latest IPSW from iTunes. (I don't even remember what the latest software version is )

Quickpwn is only for pre OS 3.0. You should follow the lovely guide here and it will have a link to all of the files that you need. And also another think to know, is that once the phone is unlocked by pwnage tool, if you just do a regular restore via iTunes the phone will stay unlocked. ;)

Huh? Don't you mean if you do a regular restore (or update), you'll lose the unlock?

No, because the baseband isn't updated or touched when you do a regular restore while NOT in DFU or restore mode. The unlock for the 2G phone actually changes the baseband itself. So the unlock remains when doing a restore in iTunes. So basically you'll have an unlocked non-jailbroken iPhone.

Huh. That's kind of cool, actually. Thanks, guess you learn something every day! :D

One more question: does MMS work on an unlocked first gen iPhone? I don't know if the first gen iPhone ever got MMS or not.
