I have an iPhone 4 that I bought on my dad's line (upgrade pricing) for the purpose of unlocking and selling. However, I'd like to not actually activate it on his line if I can avoid it (he doesn't have a data plan or anything, so activating an iphone on his line would add one). Is there any way around activating it on his line?

All you need is an AT&T micro SIM card, which your phone should have come with. Plug it in and you will get an activate screen from iTunes. You'll also notice that your iPhone is on the home screen. Go to settings and turn on Wi-Fi then go to jailbreakme.com. And you can also get Ultrasn0w from Cydia.
