T2600 and mini

Anyone here tried it? What does it go like? whast the speed increase?

Should i get a T2600 or a core2duo?

May as well get a core 2 duo, if you are going to bother. Unless the price on the T2600 is very attractive.

I "upgraded" my core duo 1.66 with a core 2 duo 1.66 (got a good deal, I wouldn't recommend it as an upgrade path), and it netted between a 5-10% increase on some of the benchmark scores.

As far as the speed increase - over what? A core solo? Duo 1.66? 1.83?

Im looking at either a T2600 (can get around $180), or i could spend a lil more and get a 2ghz core2duo (T7200 - $300).

Either one would be a good upgrade. The CoreDuo2 @ 2ghz vs. CoreDuo @2.16 would likely yield very similar speeds.

The Core2 is the latest revision (with the exception of the santa rosa based Core2's), and I believe provide 64bit support, which may be important to you in the future (Leopard).

I figure they should drop the core 2's in the mini by the time leopard is released. That way they can claim all 64 bit platforms with a 64 bit os. Then it should be cheaper to sell my mini and buy the new one, rather than upgrading. But, if they kill the mini like the other camp is thinking, I will upgrade myself and be happy for years. I think I have to wait until October to find out.

Good idea. The high end CPU's (T7200, T7600) are way too expensive while they are the current model.

If they do upgrade the mini, you can expect at least a Core 2 1.66 or 1.83ghz max.

The Mini's will likely never ship with more of a processor than even the Macbook, just to keep the machine in it's place. (as the BYOKDM $500 computer (which it hasn't been since the original 1.25 G4 machine))

Since the mini uses old macbook parts, it would make sense that when the macbook goes santa rosa. All the left over C2D chips would make it over to the Mini.

Yeah only thing is the mini and imac are keeping the prices very high on those chips. Look at newegg. The T7600 is still $659 but the new T7700 is $500. WHY? Because there is a huge demand to upgrade all these minis and imacs thats why.

I'd bet that less than 5% of the the Intel "T" cpu's are bought for the purpose upgrading Macs. More likely that they are used upgrading Dell's and the like, as well as 'build your own' laptops, or even low-power desktop boxes.

Not a T2600...a T7200! =)

Pulled the T2300 out of my mini very shortly after purchase and swapped in a T7200.
It was- and still is, in my opinion- the best bang-for-the-buck CPU upgrade option.

Heating promlems

Have you noticed any changes in the temp of the computer, now you are using the Core 2?

If Apple does kill the Mini at least I have a backup plan on up grading the processor at least.
Even though the Mac Mini solo 1.5 is a lot faster then my Quick Sliver 733 (giga net). On most things (including the PPC software). That computer a I upgraded it to a 1.2 ghz.

I can't really speak to any differences, because I didn't take any baseline readings on the original CPU.
