So I am looking to get an Android tablet preferable for my mom as a gift. Her current desktop is getting clunky. She likes Android since she uses a Nexus 5X right now. She likes to read email, web browse, watch a bunch of YouTube videos, use apps to check bills, video chat with family, and play music. Very basic stuff, but I don't want anything for her where she has to deal with lag or junky apps.

I was looking at the new Kindle Fire for $50, but I heard you need to side load the Play Store to get YouTube or get the YouTube APK. I prefer something to work out of the box. Any suggestions? Looking at about $50-$80 range. Preferable big name manufacturer for product support too. Thanks.

Why would you have to sideload YouTube? it's right in the Amazon App store.

I actually just had a hands-on experience with the $50 Amazon tablet. And I would not go that route. For $50, you're getting a tablet that offers a lot. It's built well, But it is thick and heavy for its size.

That said, you do have to root it to use Android play store by downloading four different downloads, which is not difficult and you can follow step-by-step process through YouTube.

However, the display is not very bright and is yellowish, has a very poor resolution, the silk browser is subpar at best. Those features alone is why I would not purchase it. Also, from reviews I have read, it has a lot of Wi-Fi connectivity issues and apparently the micro USB adapter will fail on these tablets after a short while as well.

The tablet I recently had a chance to experience and was completely impressed for the price point if you can find one on sale, is the "Galaxy Tab A". It comes in two size variants in 7 inch/8 inch. Android 5.1 is fairly improved and it's much improved over the Fire tablet for approximately $50 more.

I know your price point was approximately $80, but for a tablet that will last, has excellent screen brightness/resolution, stable OS, much more efficient processor, and overall is a much better tablet, that's what I would look into. The 7 inch model should be the most affordable and usually is on sale.

I actually just had a hands-on experience with the $50 Amazon tablet. And I would not go that route. For $50, you're getting a tablet that offers a lot. It's built well, But it is thick and heavy for its size.

That said, you do have to root it to use Android play store by downloading four different downloads, which is not difficult and you can follow step-by-step process through YouTube.

However, the display is not very bright and is yellowish, has a very poor resolution, the silk browser is subpar at best. Those features alone is why I would not purchase it. Is that including the newly announced Fire Tab? I can get the Fire Tab at a huge discount thanks to Amazon credits and Amazon coupon codes. I might go for a Tab A for her because it just seems like a better product, but how about LG as well? They have anything good?

Don't have experience with the newly announced fire tab. And I also don't have hardly any knowledge on LG's tablets.

I Will say this, with your Amazon coupon codes/credits, you really can't go wrong in trying the Amazon tablet if that's what you want. Just know some of their lower to mid tier tablets are subpar. With the tablet, you get a lot of Amazon services and they do have good customer service if your Mom had any questions.

But I still would venture on the path of researching the Galaxy Tab A, very impressed with android 5.0, the screen, responsiveness and overall it will last longer likely over the Amazon tablet, it's a good option to consider.

I would have to wait to get her a Tab A because I got one and gave it to a family member for $80 last year around the holidays. I just got my mom an Amazon Echo Dot, so she should enjoy that as well.

I'll tell you what, Amazon is doing big things lately. And the echo Dot is excellent for somebody that's older or having hands-free makes a huge difference. And the fact that those are $50 a piece and affordable, those are an excellent selling item.

If things go well, my card company can price match Fry's 3 for $60 Amazon Echo Dot deal because I missed out on it when I was in Canada for my uncle's funeral. Fry's couldn't honor the deal since they're out of stock, they only offered me $20 off ordering 3 together. I screen capped it so I am waiting for my card company to honor the first two. The other I got for $40 from B&H, so worst case I got one for $40.

I'm looking for an android tab that is an alternative to the ipad mini too, because apple seems to be abandoning ship

I'm a bit scared of the mediapad m3 because of the processor/gpu - not sure how long they will support it

its really a shame NVidia doesn't seem like they will be following up with a new shield tablet, id be all over that

no tablet action from sony lately either

cant bring myself to buy a Samsung tab knowing they hardly get support

Right. If You re-read my post, I stated that in paragraph two in my post. The whole download is conducted through four links through turtorial videos on YouTube. For reference:

Anyway, I am also considering ditching my iPad mini 4 for the Surface Pro 3, Surface 3, or Surface Pro 4. I have the Pro 3/Pro 4 FP scanner keyboard as well btw. Pro 3 would be better specs for cheaper, but the Pro 4 has more luxury stuff that would be nicer (retina scanner, fanless core M processor, etc).
