XtraFinder makes the changes to the regular Finder so it's completely integrated (options appear in the Menubar as well for preference or to turn it off if you feel the need). Frankly, I'm amazed at how much friendlier the Finder is with it. I knew I liked the idea of dual-pane, but tabbed browsing in Finder is also great plus there's other nice options like auto-sizing the name-field for you so you can read the file names better. Color icons caused a delay with the spinning beach ball regularly, though, so I keep that off, but everything else seems to work fine in 10.8.2 here.
I just wish Apple would improve their own Finder (there's always a danger XtraFinder won't get updated for a future OS version or whatever). It seems ridiculous they keep adding frivolous crap like Launchpad, but can't make simple meaningful and rather obvious improvements to the Finder like this. That and better dual-monitor support (like a full-screen mode that doesn't interfere with the other monitor's display and menu bar and dock options for both monitors...again things that should be obvious to any developer working on OSX that actually USES the operating system on a daily basis with more than one monitor)
