I agree for example we wouldn't have cups without Apple that being said this talk isn't critical of Apple at all.
Nor was I saying it was, I was trying to head off the inevitable flame war that is to come.

Brace yourself.

There doesn't need to be a flame war IMHO it's not us v them with SW, I do think it's us v them with data however but this talk doesn't deal with that.

I knew Apple used open source for bases of various things. I think it makes more sense than having to make things from scratch because you spend so much time and money trying to fix things that have already been ironed out by the other guys.

Yes, Apple pretty much just take and do their own thing with it, but they solve the big problem that all these projects have in their core - the end experience.

Collaboration is great, but with open source it's still all coders writing code to meet their needs and wants, vs the consumers that would benefit from the software. A lot of people start out with GIMP, but they end up just pirating Photoshop. Same thing can be said about OpenOffice and Microsoft Office.

As for being your own boss, not planning, and not aiming for success... I don't like these ideas.

I don't think it was a criticism of Apple taking thing from open source what I thought was interesting was he attributed to at least partially to their success when comparing to Microsoft. The reality is that you have to have an ideological problem with either MS or Apple to install and use Linux daily 99% of the world doesn't care, therefore there is no Linux desktop presence. I honestly think that's the way the community likes it, it lets them keep the rebel aspect of using it. Like I said a couple posts ago it wasn't intended to start a flame war or an x vs. z it was more about his interesting attribution.
